A confident start begins with feeling safe

At Sturminster Marshall First School, we understand that children learn best when they feel secure, happy, and understood.

From the very first day in Reception, we take time to get to know each child — their interests, strengths, and what helps them feel confident. Our calm routines, familiar faces, and supportive environment help children settle quickly and enjoy coming to school.

Why choose Sturminster Marshall First School for Reception?

Small classes, big difference!

We know every child, not just their name.

Our small class sizes allow staff to build strong relationships with children and families. Teachers and support staff have the time to listen, encourage, and tailor learning so every child feels confident to join in, ask questions, and try new challenges.

Children are supported at their own pace, helping them develop independence, self-belief, and a positive attitude to learning.

Learning that grows outdoors

Forest School is an important and regular part of life at Sturminster Marshall First School.

In Reception, Forest School gives children the opportunity to:

  • Explore and learn in a natural environment
  • Develop confidence, independence, and resilience
  • Work together, solve problems, and take managed risks
  • Build a love of the outdoors in all seasons

Outdoor learning supports wellbeing as well as academic development, helping children feel calm, curious, and engaged.

School days that fit family life

We know how important flexibility is for families.

Our wrap-around care runs from 7:30am to 5:30pm, offering a familiar, friendly environment at the start and end of the school day. Children are cared for by staff they know and trust, helping them feel settled and secure throughout the day.

Wrap-around care includes:

  • Calm morning arrivals
  • After-school play and activities
  • A relaxed, caring atmosphere

What a Reception day looks like

Every day in Reception is carefully planned to balance learning, play, and wellbeing.

A typical day includes:

  • A calm, welcoming start
  • Learning through play, stories, and exploration
  • Small-group teaching in phonics and early maths
  • Regular outdoor learning and Forest School sessions
  • Lunchtime with care and support
  • Reflection, play, and a relaxed end to the day

Clear routines and gentle transitions help children feel safe, confident, and ready to learn.
